Inside a Speech Therapy Session: What We Actually Do

If you have never seen a speech therapy session, it is natural to imagine something clinical or strict. The reality is far gentler. To your child, it mostly looks like play. To us, every game has a purpose. This is a look inside what we actually do at our centre in Multan.

It begins with connection, not correction

The first few minutes are about your child feeling safe and happy. A child who is relaxed will try sounds and words far more readily than one who feels tested. So we greet them warmly, follow their interest, and settle into easy play. We are watching closely the whole time, but to your child it simply feels like a friendly adult who is fun to be around.

This early trust is the foundation of everything that follows. You can read more about our overall approach on our speech and language therapy page.

Purposeful play, targeting one goal at a time

Once your child is settled, we move into activities chosen to work on their specific goals. If we are building early words, we might play with toy animals and pause to encourage a sound. If we are working on a tricky sound, we use mirrors, pictures and games that bring that sound up again and again without it ever feeling like a drill.

Children learn through repetition, but repetition only sticks when it is enjoyable. So we repeat the same target dozens of times, hidden inside bubbles, puzzles, books and turn-taking games. For older children working on clarity, we may use structured picture work, which links to our articulation support.

Reading your child moment to moment

A good session is never fixed in advance. We constantly adjust, making a task easier when your child is tired or harder when they are flying. This responsiveness is the skill behind the play, and it is what separates therapy from simply playing at home.

The last few minutes: handover to you

Therapy that stays in the therapy room rarely changes a child’s life. The real progress happens in your home, in the hours between sessions. So we always finish by showing you exactly what we did and giving you one or two simple things to try during the week. We keep it small and doable, because a busy parent doing one thing well beats ten things half done.

What progress looks like over time

Early on, you may notice small wins: your child trying a sound, attempting a new word, or staying with an activity longer. Over weeks and months these accumulate into clearer speech and more confident communication. Every child moves at their own pace, and we never promise a fixed timeline, but we do track progress carefully so you can see the direction of travel.

How we do this at Inclusive

At our MPS Road, Model Town centre in Multan, every session is built around a plan we create together after a developmental assessment. Your therapist follows that plan, records what worked, and adjusts it as your child grows. You can see how the wider journey fits together on our therapy process page. Nothing is random; every game is a small step towards a clear goal.

If you would like to see what a session could do for your child, we would love to welcome you to our Multan centre. Book a first visit and we will walk you through every step.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What actually happens in a speech therapy session?

Sessions are warm and play-based. Your therapist uses toys, games, pictures and books to gently work on sounds, words, understanding and conversation. Each activity has a purpose behind the fun, and we tailor everything to your child’s level, interests and goals.

How long is each session and how often will we come?

Sessions are usually short enough to keep your child engaged, often around forty-five minutes, and frequency depends on your child’s needs. After assessing your child we recommend a schedule and review it regularly so it stays right for your family.

Can I sit with my child during the session?

Often yes, and we encourage it, especially for younger children. Watching helps you learn the techniques to use at home. Sometimes we may ask you to step back briefly so your child focuses, but we always keep you informed and involved.

My child gets shy or upset. Will therapy still work?

That is very common, especially at first. Our therapists are patient and build trust slowly through play your child enjoys. As your child feels safe and comfortable, they engage more. We never rush, and we adjust our approach to suit your child.
