Dyscalculia and Maths Difficulties, Explained for Parents

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty with numbers. A child with dyscalculia finds it genuinely hard to sense how big a number is, to hold number facts in memory, and to keep track while counting — however much they practise. It is sometimes called “maths dyslexia”, and like dyslexia it is a difference in how the brain handles one particular thing. It is not a measure of how clever your child is.

If your child tells a story beautifully, remembers every detail of a film, and still cannot work out seven plus five without their fingers in Class 3, you are not imagining it — and more tuition is not automatically the answer. This guide covers what maths difficulties look like at each age, how dyscalculia differs from being “weak in maths”, what genuinely helps, and what you can start tomorrow morning. What is dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia is a lifelong difference in how the brain handles quantity. The part that struggles is not arithmetic technique but the sense of number underneath it — knowing without counting that a handful of five is bigger than a handful of three, that eight sits between seven and nine, that ten can be split into six and four and still be ten. When that foundation is shaky, every sum has to be rebuilt from scratch, every single time.

Two plain-language terms are worth knowing. Number sense is the instinctive feel for how big numbers are and how they relate. Subitising is seeing three dots and knowing there are three without counting them — many children with dyscalculia are still counting. In the diagnostic manuals clinicians use, dyscalculia appears as a specific learning disorder with impairment in mathematics. Is my child weak in maths, or is it dyscalculia?

“Weak in maths” describes the marks. Dyscalculia explains them. The pattern that points to dyscalculia is uneven: a child who reasons well, argues a point well and remembers what they hear, yet cannot judge which of two numbers is bigger, loses count halfway along a row of objects, and forgets on Tuesday a number fact learnt on Monday.

Only a proper assessment tells these apart, and the difference matters, because each needs completely different teaching.

What are the signs of dyscalculia at each age?

The signs change with age. Before school it shows up in counting — numbers recited in order but not matched to objects. In the early school years the giveaway is fingers for small sums and number facts that will not stick. From about eight it is time, money, place value and word problems. No single sign is proof; it is the pattern, and the fact that it persists despite practice, that matters.

Before school, age 3–5

  • Can chant “one, two, three…” but cannot count four objects and tell you how many there are.
  • Cannot look at three or four things and know how many without counting.
  • Struggles with more and less, bigger and smaller, when the answer is not obvious by size.
  • Muddles number symbols, or shows little interest in numbers in games and songs.

Early school, age 5–8

  • Still counting on fingers for small sums long after classmates have stopped.
  • Counts up from one every time, instead of counting on from the bigger number.
  • Number facts and tables disappear overnight, however many times they are revised.
  • Loses their place when counting objects, or counts one twice.
  • Copies the method but cannot say what the answer roughly should be.

Age 8 and older

  • Struggles to tell the time on an analogue clock, or to judge how long twenty minutes is.
  • Money is hard: making change, knowing whether a note is enough.
  • Place value slips — 305 written as 3005, columns misaligned.
  • Word problems stall, not because of the reading but because of choosing the operation.
  • Avoids maths, hides the copy, complains of a stomach ache before the maths period.

Why doesn’t more practice fix it?

More practice rarely fixes dyscalculia, because most extra practice is more of the same thing: symbols on a page. A child with no picture in their head of what six means cannot make six plus three meaningful by writing it out fifty more times. They memorise, they forget, and they learn that they are the stupid one. Teaching has to go back a step and rebuild the picture first.

The sequence that works is concrete, then pictorial, then abstract — and each stage is only left behind once it is genuinely secure.

What actually helps a child with dyscalculia?

Build number sense before number facts

Spend far longer than feels reasonable on small numbers — ten and under, until your child can split six into four and two without thinking, say what comes just before nine, and tell you which pile is bigger by looking. Racing ahead to tables while that foundation is missing is what produces a child who can chant seven sevens and cannot work out change from a hundred.

Let the fingers stay

Fingers are a legitimate tool, not a bad habit, and shaming a child out of them takes away their only reliable method without replacing it. What you can do is upgrade the strategy: instead of counting all nine from one, teach them to hold six in their head and count on three. Speed comes later, and it comes on its own.

Ten focused minutes a day, not an hour on Sunday

Short and daily beats long and occasional, and it is far kinder on a tired child. One game, one idea, stop while it is still going well. Our early maths home programme sets this out as simple everyday activities you can do with buttons, coins and stairs rather than another worksheet.

Reduce the load, not the expectation

A number line taped to the desk, a times-table square, a calculator for the checking step, fewer sums but the same difficulty, extra time in tests. These are not shortcuts. They stop working memory being spent on the bit your child cannot do, so it is free for the thinking — the bit that actually matters.

Is my child scared of maths, or bad at maths?

Usually both, and in that order. Maths anxiety is real and well recognised: the fear itself occupies the working memory a child needs in order to hold a sum, so a child who managed the question at home freezes on the same question in a test. The panic is not a character flaw, and easing the pressure is a teaching decision, not a soft one.

Two habits help more than any worksheet. Take the timer off — speed and understanding are different skills, and timed drills mostly measure fear. And never let your child overhear that they are careless, slow or lazy at maths. Children accept these verdicts completely, and then stop trying.

What you can do tomorrow morning

Ten minutes, the same time each day, three small steps. Count something real together — stairs, spoons, the dates on a plate — and ask “how many” before your child counts, so they guess first. Play one splitting game: here are seven beans, cover some, how many am I hiding? Then write just two sums, using objects first and symbols after.

Through the rest of the day, let maths be ordinary — buying something small and counting the change, laying the table for six. Everyday number talk builds the sense a worksheet cannot, and it never feels like a test.

“بچہ حساب میں کمزور ہے” — bacha hisab mein kamzor hai

This is how most parents describe it to us at first: bacha hisab mein kamzor hai, or bachay ko ginti nahi aati — the child is weak in maths, the child cannot manage counting. It is worth separating two things inside that one sentence. Marks going down in ریاضی can come from a missed year of school, a teacher the child was frightened of, or a genuine difficulty with number itself.

The question that separates them is simple: does your child struggle with گنتی — counting, comparing, splitting small numbers — away from the copy and the exam, in ordinary life? If the difficulty follows them into the shop and the kitchen, that is not a tuition problem. What changes first, and how long does it take?

Willingness moves first. A child stops hiding the maths copy and stops crying before the lesson, usually well before any mark on a test shifts, and that counts as real progress even though it does not look like it. Number sense with small quantities comes next, then counting on rather than counting all, then recall of facts. Fluency and speed are the slowest, and that is expected rather than a sign the support is failing. Progress here is measured in terms and school years, not weeks — so ask for a plan with checkable targets and a review date, never a promise.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can dyscalculia be identified?

Concerns can be noticed from about five or six, when a child still cannot match numbers to objects or compare small quantities. Most children are identified between seven and nine, once number facts should be settling and clearly are not. You do not have to wait for a label to start helping — good number-sense teaching helps any child who is behind.

Will more tuition fix my child’s maths?

Not on its own. Ordinary tuition usually gives more of the same symbols on paper, faster. A child who has no picture in their head of what six means will memorise and forget again. What helps is teaching that goes back to real objects and pictures first, in short daily sessions, and only then returns to written sums.

Should I let my child count on their fingers or use a calculator?

Yes. Fingers are a legitimate tool, and taking them away leaves a child with no method at all. Teach a better strategy instead of banning the old one — holding the bigger number in mind and counting on from it. A calculator for checking, and a number line on the desk, free up attention for the thinking.

Can a child have both dyslexia and dyscalculia?

Yes, and it is common enough to be worth checking for. Reading and maths difficulties often occur together, and attention difficulties can sit alongside both. This matters practically: a child struggling with word problems may be stuck on the reading, on choosing the operation, or on both, and the support is different for each.

Does dyscalculia go away as my child gets older?

The underlying difference stays, but the difficulty it causes can shrink a great deal. With good teaching, sensible tools and time, most children reach a level of everyday number skill that serves them well in adult life. What tends to disappear first is the fear and avoidance, which is often what was doing the most damage.

Will you give me a written report I can hand to my child’s school?

Yes. After an assessment we write a plan in plain language — what your child can already do, what is hard, and the specific targets we are working on. Most schools will make small, practical adjustments once they have something concrete in front of them, such as extra time, fewer sums, or a number line on the desk.

Do I need a diagnosis or a doctor’s referral before coming?
