Night waking here means this: your child wakes, they know who you are, they can talk, and in the morning they remember coming. They want water, your bed, a phone, a story, a check that you exist. It is exhausting. It is not a night terror, and it is not sleepwalking.

Night terrors: they do not know you, they scream, they forget. Night terrors. Sleepwalking: they move, they are not available for a chat. Sleepwalking. Falling asleep at the start of the night is the bedtime plan. This page is the 1am knock.

Why it keeps happening

Waking briefly is normal. Staying awake and practising a second evening is learned. If 1am earns a bottle, your bed, YouTube, or a long cuddle that only happens at night, the waking has a job. That is not a moral failing. It is learning working exactly as it should.

Also check the boring medical list before you run a programme: pain, ears, itching, asthma, a full bladder, constipation, snoring and open-mouth sleep, iron if they eat almost nothing. A child who cannot breathe well will wake. No sticker chart fixes that.

Separation fear can run the night as well as the school gate — separation anxiety. Autistic children often wake because the day had no off-switch, or because a tiny change in the room feels huge.

A boring 2am, on purpose

  1. Same return every time. Few words. Water if you have decided water is allowed. Back to their bed. Sit if you must, then leave. Do not start a conversation you only have at night.
  2. Do not import the day into the dark. No phone, no new story, no “just tonight in our bed” if you are trying to end that. Exceptions become the new rule by Thursday.
  3. If they sleep in your bed and you want that to change, move a little, not all at once. Mattress on the floor, then a chair, then the door. Sudden exile at 1am is a fright, not a plan.
  4. Fix the first bedtime. A child who falls asleep on a phone in your room at eleven will wake at two looking for the same scene. The last hour of the evening is in sleep better.
  5. Melatonin is a doctor’s conversation, not a first step, and not a substitute for the return-to-bed. Melatonin.

Both parents, and a helper if they do nights, have to run the same script. One soft adult at 2am undoes six firm nights. When a helper raises the child.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell night waking from a night terror?

Night waking: they know you, they talk, they remember in the morning. Night terror: they look through you, scream, sweat, and forget. Sleepwalking: they move and are not available for a conversation. Different responses. Do not shake a night terror or a sleepwalker to “explain.”

Should I let them into our bed?

That is a family choice. If you want it to stop, “just tonight” is how it never stops. If you are keeping co-sleeping on purpose, say so and stop fighting it at 2am. Mixed messages — sometimes yes, sometimes a fight — keep everyone up.

They want a bottle or milk at night. Should I stop?

Night milk is a powerful reward for waking, and it is hard on teeth. A doctor can advise on nutrition if they are still very young. For a preschooler, water and a boring return to bed are the usual plan. Sudden removal without a daytime calorie plan is unkind.

Could something medical be waking them?

Yes. Ears, itching, breathing, constipation, pain, a full bladder. Snoring, pauses, or an open mouth all night need a doctor. Habit work on top of an airway problem fails.

They are autistic and nights have always been like this.

Sleep problems are common. The same split still helps: terror versus awake visit versus cannot fall asleep at the start. Sensory load and a predictable wind-down matter more, not less. We will not tell you it is “just autism” so you should live with it.

How long until nights improve?

Nobody honest will give you a date. A consistent return-to-bed, with medical issues checked, often shifts in one to two weeks. If you have tried that and they are still in pieces, come in. A consultation is Rs 1,500 and lasts up to 50 minutes.
