Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty that affects how a child understands numbers and quantity. It makes the very foundations of maths hard work — a feel for how big a number is, remembering number facts, and grasping place value — even in a child who is doing well in every other subject. If your child seems bright and capable but numbers simply will not stick, dyscalculia may be part of the picture.
Struggling with maths is not the same thing as having dyscalculia, and the difference matters. Most children who fall behind do so for ordinary reasons: a topic missed, a change of school, worry about tests, or teaching that moved on before they were ready. Those children catch up once the gap is retaught. The British Dyslexia Association makes the same point — a specific learning difficulty in maths is more common than dyscalculia itself. Dyscalculia is narrower: a genuine difference in how the brain handles number and quantity, in an otherwise able child, that stays put despite good teaching and real effort.
In Multan classrooms maths is often learned by heart — tables chanted, steps memorised, speed rewarded. A child with dyscalculia can hold on for a while by memorising, which is exactly why the difficulty is so often missed, until the sums get bigger and memory alone stops carrying them. Two more local clues: the trouble shows up in Urdu and in English alike, because what is hard is quantity rather than vocabulary; and the child is usually the one described at home as “weak in studies” or lazy, when in fact they are working harder at maths than anyone realises.
Dyscalculia does not simply pass with age, but that is not the same as your child being stuck. It responds well to the right kind of teaching: hands-on, visual, one small step at a time, with the clock taken off it. Children build real understanding rather than borrowed tricks, and their confidence comes back. Starting earlier makes it easier, but genuinely useful help can begin at any age.
What are the signs of dyscalculia in children?
- Before school (3–5): counting is a rhyme rather than a count — they can chant “one, two, three” but lose track with real objects, missing some out and counting others twice.
- Before school (3–5): they cannot see at a glance which of two small groups has more, and have to count both every single time.
- Early school (5–7): fingers are still needed for the smallest sums, and they count up from one instead of counting on from the bigger number.
- Early school (5–7): number bonds and times tables will not stick however often they are practised — what was secure on Monday has gone by Thursday.
- Early school (5–7): place value never settles, so the 2 in 20 and the 2 in 2 feel like the same thing.
- Any age: the same sum gets very different answers on different days, and your child cannot tell you whether an answer is roughly right.
- Any age: calculations are slow and effortful even when the method is understood, so the page is never finished in the time allowed.
- Any age: telling the time, handling money and working out change are genuinely hard rather than just unfamiliar.
- Any age: word problems are hard to begin — your child can read every word and still not see which operation is being asked for.
- Any age: maths brings real dread. They may say they “hate maths” or that they are “stupid at it”, or get a tummy ache on the days maths is timetabled.
- Outside school: estimating, remembering a phone number, following a recipe in order, or judging how long something will take can all be a struggle.
- In both languages: the difficulty is the same whether the numbers are in Urdu or in English, which points to quantity rather than to language being the problem.
How is dyscalculia helped, and what can you do at home?
- Concrete, then pictures, then numbers — in that order, every time. Start with real objects your child can pick up and move, move to a drawing or a number line, and only then write the digits and symbols. This concrete-pictorial-abstract sequence is the single most useful change most families make.
- Give quantity something to hold. Counters, buttons, bottle tops, ten-frames and a number line turn “seven” from a word into an amount your child can see, touch and rearrange.
- Repair the foundation rather than the current chapter. That usually means going back to recognising small amounts without counting them (subitising), counting on from the bigger number instead of from one, and number bonds to ten — before anything else is layered on top.
- Little and often beats long, exhausting sessions. Ten focused minutes a day does far more than an hour at the weekend, and it is much kinder on a tired child.
- Take the clock off it. Speed tests and racing the timer raise anxiety and hide what a child actually understands. Aim for getting there securely; quickly comes later, or comes with a calculator, and that is fine.
- Let the supports stay. Fingers, a number line and a printed times-table square are tools, not cheating — the same way reading glasses are not cheating. Taking them away does not build fluency, it just stops the maths.
- Bring maths into ordinary life, where it makes sense. Weighing flour, counting out coins in the shop, sharing snacks fairly, halving a recipe, reading the clock together — real quantities are far easier to grasp than numbers on a page.
- What you can do tomorrow morning: ten minutes, three steps. Count something real together and say the total. Hop the same sum along a number line drawn on paper. Ask one true-life number question — how many chapatis for five people if everyone has two? Then stop while it is still going well.
- What a session with us looks like: a short warm-up on something already secure, one new idea taught with objects first and digits last, a real-life problem that uses it, and a two-minute check at the end. One-to-one, calm, and short enough to finish on a success.
- What tends to change first: the fear. Children usually stop dreading maths before their marks move. Accuracy on the foundation facts comes next. Speed and instant recall of tables are normally the slowest of all — that is expected, not a sign the help is failing.
- Protect confidence above the marks. Praise the thinking and the strategy rather than the speed, treat mistakes as information, and never let your child overhear that they are lazy or stupid at maths. Confidence is what keeps them trying.
- Get the school on side. Ask the class teacher for the small practical things: extra time, fewer questions rather than easier ones, a tables square on the desk, and credit for a correct method even when the answer slips. A written plan makes those conversations much shorter.
- A learning assessment shows exactly where to begin. We look at counting, comparing quantities, number facts, place value and working memory, and we check reading and attention alongside, because both change how maths looks. You get a plan in plain language with targets you can actually check.
- What would make us look further before settling on dyscalculia: learning that is slower right across every subject and in daily life too; reading and spelling that are just as hard; an inability to sit and attend long enough to learn anything; or anxiety so high that no fair picture can be taken. Hearing and vision are worth checking too — a child who cannot see the board or hear the instruction will look like a child who cannot do the maths.

Picture a nine-year-old who reads well and loves stories but still counts on her fingers for small sums, cannot hold on to her times tables however much she practises, and cries before maths tests. Once dyscalculia is recognised, the teaching changes shape: counters and a number line before any digits are written, ten minutes a day rather than an hour on Sunday, real maths while cooking and shopping, and no timer. The first thing to shift is that she stops dreading the lesson. Accuracy follows over the months after that, and tables come last of all.

Is my child just bad at maths, or is it dyscalculia?
Being behind in maths is common; dyscalculia is narrower. A child who missed a topic usually catches up once it is retaught. Dyscalculia affects the building blocks themselves — quantity, number sense, number facts and place value — and it holds on despite good teaching and hard work. The pattern is uneven: strong in other subjects, stuck on number. A learning and developmental assessment is what tells the two apart.
What is the difference between dyscalculia and dyslexia?
They are separate specific learning difficulties. Dyslexia affects reading and spelling, through difficulty holding and pulling apart the sounds inside words. Dyscalculia affects numbers and quantity. Dysgraphia affects handwriting and getting ideas onto the page. A child can have one, two or all three, so each skill has to be looked at separately rather than judged by one overall test.
At what age can dyscalculia be identified?
Early clues can show before school — losing track when counting real objects, or having to count two small groups instead of seeing which has more. Dyscalculia itself is usually recognised in the early primary years, once a child has had proper maths teaching and is still clearly behind. You do not have to wait for a label: hands-on number work helps from the moment you are worried.
Does dyscalculia mean my child has low intelligence?
No. Dyscalculia sits entirely apart from intelligence. It occurs in children right across the range of ability, and many are articulate, curious and doing well in reading, science or art. The difficulty is specific to number and quantity, not to thinking or learning in general. Mistaking it for low ability is the most damaging thing that happens to these children.
How do I teach a sum at home without making it worse?
Teach it three times, in the same order: with objects, then with a picture, then with digits. Never start at the digits. Here is what that looks like for 7 + 5, and it works just as well for any sum your child is stuck on:
Can dyscalculia be cured, and will my child ever be good at maths?
Dyscalculia is a lifelong difference rather than an illness, so there is nothing to cure — what changes is the teaching. With hands-on, step-by-step lessons, everyday practice and the timed pressure removed, children build genuine number sense, handle money and time, sit their exams and go on to careers they enjoy. Progress is steady rather than sudden, and confidence usually returns before the marks do.
The school says my child is just weak in studies — what should I do?
“Weak in studies” describes what the teacher sees; it does not explain it. Ask for the pattern instead: is only maths behind, or is everything behind? A gap in number alone points to dyscalculia; slower learning across every subject and in daily skills points somewhere else — see slow learners and intellectual disability.
