Children learn to read in a fairly predictable order. First they notice the sounds inside spoken words; then they learn which letters stand for those sounds; then they blend those sounds into whole words; and finally word reading becomes quick enough that all their attention can go to meaning. Reading is not picked up the way talking is picked up. It is built, step by careful step, on the spoken language a child already has.
This guide walks through those steps in plain language, as one of our parent guides to child development. It explains why English spelling is genuinely hard, why learning to read in Urdu and English at the same time adds a layer, and what is really going on when a bright, capable child struggles far more than you would expect. Dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia are differences in how the brain handles particular kinds of information — not signs of low intelligence, laziness or poor parenting. They are also well understood, and there are clear, evidence-based ways to teach a child while keeping their confidence intact.
Reading is built on spoken language
Long before a child meets a single letter, the foundations of reading are being laid every time you talk, sing and read aloud together. Spoken language — a rich vocabulary, an ear for how sentences hang together, and the background knowledge that words carry — is the ground reading grows from. Reading is ultimately about turning marks on a page back into language the child already understands.
That is why sharing books with a baby or toddler who cannot yet read is anything but pointless. You are growing their vocabulary, their curiosity and their sense that print means something — and none of it needs flashcards or drills. Conversation, nursery rhymes and everyday chatter about the world are the real preparation for literacy, and they cost nothing but your time.
Phonological awareness: hearing the sounds inside words
Before children can link sounds to letters, they have to notice that spoken words are made of smaller sounds at all. This is called phonological awareness, and it grows through the ear, not the eye. It starts with big chunks — hearing that words rhyme, clapping out the syllables in ‘el-e-phant’ — and sharpens down to the smallest units of sound, called phonemes: hearing that ‘cat’ is made of three sounds, /c/ /a/ /t/.
This knack for hearing, separating and playing with individual sounds is one of the strongest predictors of how easily a child will learn to read. It is also something you can nurture playfully long before school starts: rhyming games, silly alliteration, breaking names into beats, and ‘I spy’ with sounds rather than letters. Once a child can hear the sounds inside words, matching those sounds to letters becomes far more manageable.
Phonics, decoding and the climb to fluency
Phonics is where the ear meets the eye: children learn which letters and letter patterns stand for which sounds, and how to blend those sounds into a word. That process — turning printed letters into spoken words — is called decoding. Systematic phonics teaching hands children a reliable way to tackle words they have never seen before, instead of guessing from the pictures or memorising whole words by their shape.
At first, decoding is slow and effortful; every word is a little puzzle. With practice on real, connected text, recognition speeds up until it feels automatic — and that automatic word reading is called fluency. It matters enormously. Once a child is no longer pouring all their mental energy into working out each word, that energy is freed for the real point of reading: understanding and enjoying what the words say. Fluency is the bridge between decoding and comprehension.
The simple view of reading: two skills, not one
One of the most useful ideas in reading research is the ‘simple view of reading’. It says that reading comprehension is the product of two separate abilities: being able to decode the words on the page, and being able to understand spoken language. Researchers write it as decoding multiplied by language comprehension — and because it is multiplication, if either part drops near zero, comprehension collapses however strong the other part is.
This explains the children who seem so puzzling. Some read a page aloud beautifully yet cannot tell you a thing about what it meant; their decoding is strong but their language comprehension needs support. Others follow any story you read aloud to them yet stumble badly the moment they read it themselves; their language is fine and decoding is the barrier, as is often the case in dyslexia. Knowing which side your child is struggling on tells you where to put your effort, rather than doing ‘more reading’ and hoping.
What reading usually looks like at each age
Most children are ready to start matching letters to sounds somewhere around four to five, read simple books haltingly at five to six, and read short books on their own somewhere around six to seven. The normal range is genuinely wide, just as it is for every other developmental milestone. What matters more than the date is the direction of travel: is your child further on this term than last term?
At three and four, look for interest rather than skill. The early signs that a child is getting ready to read are joining in with rhymes, recognising the first letter of their own name, holding a book the right way up, and pretending to read a familiar story from memory.
At five, many children know most letter sounds, can blend a simple three-sound word such as ‘m-a-p’, and write a wobbly version of their name.
At six, reading of simple, regular words is usually becoming accurate even if it is still slow, and children begin to recognise common words such as ‘the’ and ‘said’ on sight.
At seven and eight, accuracy should be giving way to fluency: enough speed and expression that the story, rather than the sounding-out, is what the child notices. By nine or ten, reading has quietly become a tool for learning other things.
These are broad patterns, not deadlines, and they depend heavily on when and how a child has been taught. A child who has only just begun formal reading instruction is not behind.
Why English spelling is genuinely hard
If your child finds spelling confusing, they are not wrong — English is one of the trickiest writing systems to learn. Unlike languages where each letter reliably makes one sound, English has around 44 sounds spelled in over 250 ways. The same letters make different sounds (“cough”, “though”, “through”), and the same sound is spelled many ways (“to”, “too”, “two”). Much of this is because English borrowed words from many languages and kept their original spellings.
So spelling difficulty is often a feature of the language, not a failure of the child. Some patterns simply have to be taught and practised rather than reasoned out, and struggling to spell does not by itself signal a deeper difficulty — though persistent, severe trouble with spelling alongside reading can be one sign of dyslexia.
Learning to read in Urdu and English at the same time
Many children in Pakistan meet two written codes at once, Urdu and English, often while the language spoken at home is a third one such as Saraiki or Punjabi. Both scripts are demanding, for different reasons, and the child is doing double the work.
Urdu script is cursive: letters change shape depending on where they sit in a word, and the short vowel marks are usually left off altogether, so the reader has to supply them from what the word could be. That leans heavily on vocabulary and on already knowing the word. English is not cursive, but its spelling is famously irregular. The underlying skills do carry across — hearing the sounds inside words helps in any language — but the letter-to-sound rules do not transfer, and each script has to be taught properly in its own right.
This has a practical use. A child who reads Urdu comfortably but stalls in English usually has a gap in how English has been taught, not a reading difficulty. A child who is slow, effortful and inaccurate in both, over a long stretch and despite decent teaching, is the child worth looking at more closely. Being bilingual does not cause reading difficulty, and dropping one language rarely fixes it.
Dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia: bright children, different wiring
Some children work far harder than their classmates on one specific skill and still make slower progress. These are called specific learning difficulties, and the key word is specific — the difficulty affects one area while other abilities may be perfectly strong or even exceptional. Dyslexia mainly affects accurate, fluent word reading and spelling, and is linked to differences in processing the sounds in words. Dyscalculia affects the sense of number and learning mathematics: comparing quantities, remembering number facts, grasping place value. Dysgraphia affects the physical and organisational act of writing, so handwriting, spelling and getting ideas onto the page can all feel disproportionately hard; its physical side overlaps with the fine-motor and sensory skills an occupational therapist works on.
None of these is caused by low intelligence, laziness or poor teaching, and none is something a child grows out of by “trying harder”. They are lifelong differences in how the brain handles particular information, and they often sit alongside real strengths in reasoning, creativity or problem-solving. They also travel together more often than people expect, so a child with messy writing and dreadful spelling is worth looking at as a whole rather than one subject at a time. When a child is sharp in conversation but stuck on the page, believing them is the first and most important act of support.
How do I know if it is dyslexia, or just a slow start?
You cannot tell from one bad term, and nobody should label a child on that basis. What raises the question is a persistent gap: a child who talks, reasons and remembers well, who has been taught properly and works hard, yet still reads slowly, guesses at words from the first letter, and spells the same word three different ways on one page.
Before school, the early clues are usually about sound rather than letters — trouble hearing rhymes, muddling the order of sounds in longer words, being slow to learn letter names, and a family history of reading or spelling difficulty. In the early school years, the tell-tale pattern is effortful, inaccurate word reading: sounding out the same small word again and again as though meeting it for the first time, and finding reading exhausting out of all proportion to how capable the child is elsewhere.
Two simple things are worth ruling out first, because both can look exactly like a reading problem: hearing and vision. It is worth knowing the signs of a hearing problem in children, because glue ear that comes and goes, or long-sightedness nobody has picked up, will quietly undermine a child in class. Ask your child’s teacher what they actually see day to day. If the picture is not improving after a term or two of proper, systematic teaching, ask for an assessment rather than waiting another year. Reading difficulty does not resolve by being ignored — and it is never a reason to think less of a child.
Teaching that works — and protecting self-esteem
For children who struggle, the most effective approach is structured, explicit teaching, often described as structured literacy or multisensory teaching. It breaks skills into small, logical steps, teaches them directly rather than expecting the child to infer them, revisits them until they are secure, and engages several senses at once — seeing, hearing, saying and tracing letters and sounds together. This benefits all learners, but for a struggling child it is essential rather than optional.
Ten focused minutes a day beats an hour of battle at the weekend. A workable shape: two or three minutes revising the letter-sound patterns your child is currently learning, five minutes reading a book easy enough that they stumble on no more than about one word in ten, and a minute or two talking about what happened in the story. Teachers use that one-in-ten rule of thumb for a reason — beyond it, a child is working so hard on the words that nothing is left over for learning. If a book is harder than that, it is the wrong book, not the wrong child; read that one aloud to them instead.
Just as important is your child’s sense of themselves as a capable learner. Repeated failure is corrosive, and a child who decides “I am just stupid” will stop trying long before their brain stops being able to learn. Separate effort from outcome, praise strategies and persistence, keep reading rich stories aloud that they cannot yet decode alone, and get a proper assessment if the worry persists. A struggling child does not need to be pushed harder. They need to be taught differently, and to know you are firmly on their side.
What we look at when a parent brings us a struggling reader
Parents usually arrive with a school report and a sentence like “he is bright, but he just will not read”. Our first job is to find where the chain breaks, because “struggling with reading” can mean five different things.
We listen to the child read aloud and watch what they do with a word they do not know — sound it out, guess from the first letter, or freeze. We check whether they can hear and play with sounds when there is no print in front of them at all. We look at how quickly they can name familiar things such as colours and objects, because naming speed sits close to reading fluency. We check comprehension separately from decoding, since a child can be strong at one and weak at the other. And we ask about spelling, handwriting and maths, because these difficulties often travel together.
What that gives you is not a label but a starting point: this child needs sound work, that one needs vocabulary and background knowledge, another needs the handwriting load lifted so their ideas can reach the page.
