By 3 years: milestone checklist

Talking, playing and imagining take off. Here’s what most three-year-olds do.

Tick each skill your child can do. There are no wrong answers — this is a guide, not a test.

Communication & language

  • Talks in short sentences (3–4 words)
  • Is understood by family most of the time
  • Answers simple “what” and “where” questions
  • Names familiar objects, colours or animals
  • Follows two- to three-step instructions

Social & play

  • Plays alongside and starts to play with other children
  • Takes turns sometimes
  • Enjoys imaginative, make-believe play
  • Shows a wide range of emotions

Movement & self-care

  • Jumps, climbs and pedals a tricycle
  • Draws a circle and holds a crayon well
  • Feeds themselves with a spoon
  • Helps dress and undress

When it’s worth seeking advice

  • Speech unclear to people outside the family
  • Not using short sentences
  • No pretend play or interest in other children
  • Frequent falling or very clumsy movements

If several of these feel familiar, an early, gentle check brings clarity — and support while it helps most.

This checklist is a general guide and not a diagnosis. Children develop at their own pace. For a clear answer, contact us for a friendly assessment.
