The other six days

Autism support at home

Home is the programme. A clinic hour cannot outrun breakfast, the door, and the 4pm crash. We pick one routine and one way to ask, then coach you until it is yours.

What to try this week

A first-then. A pause so they can request. A warning before a change. A place to recover that is not a punishment. Programs: autism connection, first-then, daily routine. Coaching: parent coaching.

Relatives and helpers

If Dadi and the helper use two scripts, the child will pick the easier one. One line on the fridge. Explaining therapy to relatives, when a helper raises the child.

Warn before a change

A photo, a first-then card, or the same sentence every time. Printable: first-then. Coaching: parent coaching.

The idea behind the work (in the books)

Follow their lead, leave a pause, say it one word longer. None of this needs a resource pack.

  • Hanen — OWL at home

Observe, wait, listen. Honour a point or a picture as a proper turn, then model the word.

  • Rogers and Dawson — parent as therapist

The hours that change things happen at home. The ESDM trials used more intensity than a weekly clinic hour. We take the parent-in-the-room idea.

These are teaching ideas, named so you can look them up. Naming a book is not a claim that we run a certified programme of that name — if we do not, the page says so.

What the research tells us

This isn’t just our opinion — it’s grounded in published research. Here are a few findings from trusted, independent sources:

  • A Cochrane review of parent-mediated early intervention (17 trials, 919 children) found strong evidence that parent–child interaction changes — more shared attention, more parent synchrony. Evidence that the child’s own language and adaptive skills change was smaller and less certain.

    — Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews — Oono, Honey and McConachie (2013), CD009774. View source
  • NICE CG170 recommends a play-based social-communication intervention with parents, carers and teachers to increase joint attention, engagement and reciprocal communication, adjusted to the child’s developmental level. For pre-school children it recommends parent mediation.

    — NICE Clinical Guideline CG170 — Autism spectrum disorder in under 19s: support and management. View source

FAQ

At home — questions parents ask

Should I stop stimming?

Not if nobody is getting hurt. It is often regulation. Suppressing it usually makes the next hour worse.

Screens as a calm-down?

They work until they do not. Teach a recovery that does not need a phone, even if the phone is still in the mix for now.

Siblings?

They need a version of the story and some protected time. Supporting siblings.

Can you coach us online?

Yes. A consultation is Rs 1,500 and lasts up to 50 minutes. See online autism support.

How much home practice?

Two or three things in routines you already have. Twenty games on a sheet will not happen.
