Music-based work with autistic children
Rhythm can hold joint attention when words bounce off. The plan is still a way to ask, a sit, a stop — not a cure, and not registered music therapy.

What we use it for
Look when the song starts. Request more. Stop when it stops. A goodbye song that actually ends. Clinical frame: Mahnoor on autism. Programme: autism support.
What the research does and does not say
A 2022 Cochrane review (Geretsegger and colleagues, CD004381) found moderate-certainty evidence that music therapy run by music therapists is associated with global improvement, reduced total autism symptom severity and better quality of life. It found no clear difference for social interaction or communication immediately after therapy. That is a different profession. We use songs as a teaching medium and we say so. Source: Cochrane CD004381.
A goodbye song that actually ends
Many autistic children can start a song and cannot stop it. The goodbye that ends is a school skill. We practise it here so Monday morning is not the first time.
Clinical frame: Mahnoor on autism. School: Akasha. Programme: autism support.
Do not borrow the Cochrane numbers for this room
Geretsegger and colleagues (2022, CD004381) studied music therapists. Moderate-certainty global improvement is about that profession. Low-certainty, no clear difference for social interaction is also about that profession. We use a drum. We do not wear their title. Read the review.

The idea behind the work (in the books)
A goodbye song that actually ends is a school skill. We do not borrow Cochrane numbers for a profession we are not.
Trevarthen — communicative musicality
The pulse between you and the child is communication, not performance. We take the pulse and the pause, not neurologic music therapy.
Prizant — regulation
A song they already love can be the door. Then a stop. Banning the clip as step one often removes the only door.
What the research tells us
This isn’t just our opinion — it’s grounded in published research. Here are a few findings from trusted, independent sources:
A 2022 Cochrane review of 26 studies found moderate-certainty evidence that music therapy delivered by music therapists is associated with global improvement and better quality of life. It found no clear difference for social interaction or verbal communication at that time point. Inclusive does not employ a registered music therapist.

View sourceA Cochrane review of early intensive behavioural intervention found improvements in adaptive behaviour, learning and language compared with standard care, and did not find evidence that it reduced autism symptom severity. The work teaches skills. It is not a treatment for autism itself.

Autism — questions parents ask
Will music make my non-speaking child talk?
It can open vocal play. It is not a promise of words. Talking goals stay with speech therapy.
They cover their ears.
Then we turn the volume down, or we use rhythm without a recording. Sensory load is real — sensory support.
They only want the same three-second clip on loop.
We start there, then add a stop and a choice. Banning the clip as step one often removes the only door.
