Parent coaching for behaviour
Behaviour coaching is one routine that blows up, one replacement way to ask, and less volume from the adult. Not a punishment programme.

What we coach
What the behaviour is doing — escape, attention, a request they cannot say, sensory load. Then a replacement. ABA: behavioural therapy. Noor: Noor Fatima. Mahnoor: behaviour.
When feelings are the wall
Psychology with Salman. Related: tantrum or meltdown.
Name the function, then teach the ask
Escape, attention, a request they cannot say, sensory load. Then a replacement. Planned ignoring of a small bid for attention is sometimes the move. Ignoring a safety issue is never the move. We will say which is which.
ABA: behavioural therapy. Noor: Noor. Mahnoor: behaviour. ABC chart: printable.
When it is feelings, not a missing skill
Psychology with Salman. Tantrum or meltdown. Coaching still helps the adult’s volume while that work happens.
One behaviour this week
Not twelve. The one that runs the house. ABA when the function has to be worked out in the room: behavioural therapy. Printable: ABC chart.
One behaviour, paid out the new way
Name the job: escape, attention, a request they cannot say, sensory load. Teach the ask that replaces it. Pay the ask. Do not pay the scream. Everyone in the house, same two responses. ABC chart for a fortnight so the next call is about a pattern, not a vibe.
If feelings are the wall, psychology leads: anger, Salman. If the function has to be worked out in the room: ABA. Hitting: hitting and biting.
The idea behind the work (in the books)
Behaviour coaching names the job of the behaviour, then teaches a faster ask.
Cooper, Heron and Heward — A-B-C
What happened just before, the behaviour, what happened after. The consequence is usually the clue.
Kazdin — PMT
Praise the ten quiet seconds. Make the replacement easier than the old behaviour. Not a punishment programme.
What the research tells us
This isn’t just our opinion — it’s grounded in published research. Here are a few findings from trusted, independent sources:
NICE CG170 recommends a play-based social-communication intervention with parents, carers and teachers to increase joint attention, engagement and reciprocal communication, adjusted to the child’s developmental level. For pre-school children it recommends parent mediation.
— NICE Clinical Guideline CG170 — Autism spectrum disorder in under 19s: support and management. View sourceCheng and colleagues (2023) meta-analysed parent-implemented interventions. Overall benefits were moderate; adaptive behaviour and life-skills effects were the smallest. Coaching helps. It is not a guarantee of independence.

Behaviour — questions parents ask
Will you tell me to ignore it?
Sometimes planned ignoring of a small bid for attention. Never of a safety issue. We will say which is which.
Can the helper join?
Yes. If the afternoon adult is not in the session, the week unravels.
Will you tell me to use punishment?
No. We teach a replacement and change what happens around the behaviour. Punishment-first is not the plan.
Should I ignore the hitting?
Safety first. Then teach the ask that replaces it. Ignoring injury is not the plan.
