Parent coaching for late talkers
For a late talker, you are the person who hears every almost-word. Coaching is how we put speech work into meals and play, without turning the house into a drill.

What we coach
Pause so there is a slot to fill. Map one word onto a routine they already love. Stop before they switch off. Speech pillar: speech therapy. Mahnoor: how she does speech.
When coaching is not enough
Hearing, a hands-on assessment, or a child who needs to be seen. We say so. Speech delay.
Pause, map, stop
Pause so there is a slot. Map one word onto a routine they already love. Stop before they switch off. Mahnoor: speech. Home: talking program. Roman Urdu: bacha bolta nahi.
Hearing still matters. If it has not been checked, we will say so before we stack more songs.
When coaching is not enough
Unclear speech that strangers cannot follow, stammering that has lasted, lost words, or a child who needs to be seen. Then speech therapy is the door, with coaching beside it — not instead of it.
Count both languages
Paani and water are both words. Mixing Urdu and English in one sentence is typical. Speech still sits with speech therapy when the child needs to be seen. Hearing first if it has never been checked.
The idea behind the work (in the books)
Late-talker coaching is a pause so there is a slot to fill.
Hanen — Observe, Wait, Listen
The useful move is waiting longer than feels polite. We coach that pause at snack, bath or play. Not a certified Hanen course.
Bruner — scaffolding
You hold just enough of the word that they can take the next sound, then you take the prop away.
What the research tells us
This isn’t just our opinion — it’s grounded in published research. Here are a few findings from trusted, independent sources:
A Cochrane review of parent-mediated early intervention (17 trials, 919 children) found strong evidence that parent–child interaction changes — more shared attention, more parent synchrony. Evidence that the child’s own language and adaptive skills change was smaller and less certain.
— Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews — Oono, Honey and McConachie (2013), CD009774. View sourceNICE CG170 recommends a play-based social-communication intervention with parents, carers and teachers to increase joint attention, engagement and reciprocal communication, adjusted to the child’s developmental level. For pre-school children it recommends parent mediation.

Late talkers — questions parents ask
Will this replace speech therapy?
Sometimes it is enough for a mild delay. Often it sits beside therapy. Honesty about that is the job.
Which language?
The one they hear most. We count words across Urdu and English.
Which language should I coach in?
The one they hear most. We count words across Urdu and English.
Can coaching replace speech therapy?
No. It is how the speech hour survives the other six days. If the child needs to be seen, we say so.
