Ordinary days

School readiness at home

Home practice is breakfast, the bag and the door — not a mini-school at the dining table. Tick the checklist over a week of ordinary days, not the best afternoon.

What to tick

The checklist and the parent guide. Coaching can watch the door live: parent coaching.

Pre-reading at home

Sounds in play, a story sit, pencil control if the hand is ready. Akasha: literacy readiness. Not a crash course in the alphabet.

Ordinary days, not the best afternoon

Tick the checklist over a week. A skill they have once on a good day is not a skill they have. The door is the exam.

Parent guide: school readiness. Coaching: parent coaching.

Letters at the dining table

If they freeze at school and recite ABC at home, letters were never the whole job. Sitting and a goodbye are. Pre-reading when kind: Akasha on literacy.

Tick ordinary days

Use the checklist over a week of ordinary days, not the best afternoon. Coaching can watch the goodbye: parent coaching.

Breakfast, the bag, the door

Not a mini-school at the dining table. Tick the checklist over a week of ordinary days, not the best afternoon. The goodbye that ends is a skill. Coaching can watch it: parent coaching.

Pre-reading at home is sounds in play and a story sit, not ABC as a trophy. Akasha on literacy, early reading. Delay a year only after assessment, not as a rule: parent guide.

The idea behind the work (in the books)

Breakfast, the bag, the door. Not a mini-school at the dining table.

  • Blair — self-regulation in routines

The morning is where waiting and switching get practised. Reciting ABC at the table is not that practice.

  • Piaget — play before paper

A child who cannot last a floor game will not last copy-from-the-board. Play is the assessment.

These are teaching ideas, named so you can look them up. Naming a book is not a claim that we run a certified programme of that name — if we do not, the page says so.

What the research tells us

This isn’t just our opinion — it’s grounded in published research. Here are a few findings from trusted, independent sources:

  • Blair and Raver (Annual Review of Psychology, 2015) treat school readiness as self-regulation — holding a rule, waiting, switching — which sets the stage for letters and numbers rather than replacing them.

FAQ

At home — questions parents ask

Should we delay school a year?

Sometimes. That is a judgement after assessment, not a rule from a checklist alone.

They know ABC at home and freeze at school.

Then sitting and a goodbye are the gap. Letters were never the whole job.

Should we delay school a year because of this checklist?

Not from a checklist alone. That is a judgement after assessment.

Should we delay school a year?

Sometimes, if sitting, waiting and language are the gap. That is a judgement after we have seen your child.
