The noisy class

Sensory support in the classroom

A classroom is sound, chairs, fluorescent light and a surprise bell. We write two or three asks a teacher can try for ten days — a seat, a warning, a break — not a sensory-room fantasy.

Seat, warning, break. Ordinary classroom. Ten school days.

Asks that usually travel

A seat away from the door. A warning before the bell if anyone can give one. Movement that is allowed, not sneaked. Headphones only if the school will actually permit them. Classroom support, letter.

What we will not ask a teacher to build

A sensory gym. A one-to-one who does not exist. A promise the class will be quiet. The letter has to survive a real Pakistani school week.

One-page asks

Seat away from the speaker. Warning before a fire drill. Ear defenders if they help and the school will allow them. Classroom support, letter, noisy classrooms.

What a Pakistani teacher can actually try

Seat away from the speaker and the door. A warning before the bell or a fire drill. Ear defenders if they help and the school will allow them for ten days as a trial. Instructions in pieces. None of that needs a Western IEP. Put it on one page: classroom support.

If they explode at the gate, the school day still counted. Recovery at home is the other half. Psychology if worry is the wall: psychology and school. Autistic children often need this page plus autism and school.

The idea behind the work (in the books)

A noisy class is a sensory demand. Ear defenders, a seat, a warning before the bell — small asks a teacher can try.

  • Dunn — the environment as part of the profile

Lighting, noise, the canteen. NICE tells clinicians to look at the environment before treating behaviour as defiance.

  • Blair — regulation in the group

Sitting through a lesson is EF plus sensory load. School-readiness: classroom.

These are teaching ideas, named so you can look them up. Naming a book is not a claim that we run a certified programme of that name — if we do not, the page says so.

What the research tells us

This isn’t just our opinion — it’s grounded in published research. Here are a few findings from trusted, independent sources:

  • NICE CG170 recommends a play-based social-communication intervention with parents, carers and teachers to increase joint attention, engagement and reciprocal communication, adjusted to the child’s developmental level. For pre-school children it recommends parent mediation.

FAQ

School — questions parents ask

The school says they are fine.

They may be holding it together until 4pm. That still counts.

Can they have extra time because of sensory needs?

Describe what you see. The concession is the school’s. We do not invent a medical certificate.

Homework in a noisy house.

One subject, a timer, a quieter corner. Homework.

How do we start?

A consultation is Rs 1,500 and lasts up to 50 minutes. Bring the teacher’s one line, even if it is “distracted”.

They hold it together at school and explode at the door.

The tank emptied. That is not proof school is fine. After-school recovery is part of the plan. Psychology if the feelings are the wall: child psychology.
